Isobel Mohr
I’m Isobel, a PPE student studying in 2nd year at the University of Edinburgh. My particular concern in Human Rights lie principally in gender and sex-based discussion. However, I joined FGHR to learn much more about the human rights world and develop my objective writing skills. Since working with the Red Cross in Nepal, I’ve realised quite how important vocalising these conversations are. Therefore, I hope to use the FGHR platform as a means of educating (both myself and readers) and inspiring conversation.

Nasreen Basheer
Having completed my Master’s in International Development from the University of Edinburgh, I am currently interning with a NGO working towards creating safe online spaces, ensuring child safety, and aiding survivors of sexual violence heal in India. As a South Asian, Muslim, woman, my interest in human rights stems, inevitably, from my observations of the world from an intersectional standpoint. I was drawn to FGHR’s calls for Content Writers because, as a young, student-led initiative, I felt that the work done by the Forum was sure to be passionate, thorough, and, above all, true to itself. Surely enough, at FGHR, I have found the space to build knowledge and develop my position on matters relating to global human rights through stimulating conversations with similarly motivated peers.

I am a 2nd year student studying International Relations (MA), who has an interest specifically in Southern Africa. Joining Forum came from a place of necessity for me. Wanting to actively research and commit to producing written work that truly reflected the many human rights breaches that have taken place particularly in Southern Africa, as well as providing a historical context.

I am currently completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh in History and Politics. I am interested in combining the historical legacy of colonialism and Western Imperialism in the Middle East with the political instability and human rights violations of that region to try to understand the sources of fragility. The Forum for Global Human Rights is an incredible opportunity for me to expand on this passion and practice human rights advocacy through writing, researching and understanding more about the political, social and cultural environments that the state of human rights exists in.

I received my BA in History at the University of Albany in New York, my MSc in Intellectual History at the University of Edinburgh, and am currently in the Open-Oxford-Cambridge doctoral training programme working on a PhD in History. My research interests touch on identity, personhood, and ideology, and I try to use history to contextualize and better appreciate modern problems. The FGHR helps me to make my research more interdisciplinary, accessible to non-historians, and provides me with an outlet in which my research can contribute to important conversations in the field of human rights.

I am currently a Master's student at the University of Edinburgh studying an LLM in International Law after graduating from the University of Exeter with an LLB Law (Honours) Degree in 2019. My academic studies and international volunteering experiences in the UK, Kenya and New Zealand, have highlighted to me the often discrepancy between the utopian nature of human rights in theory and the violations that occur within current legal frameworks and practice. I believe that through interdisciplinary, intergenerational and inclusive conversation, which FGHR encourages, we can collectively work towards a greater realisation of international human rights.
